ARTIST Statements - Painting

Luckily my mother was a poet and so encouraged creativity in my early life.

I studied Art as well as Architecture at UC Berkeley and went on to have a career

in each. Now semi-retired  I’m happy to live quietly with a home studio continuing in the arts. My Photography, Painting and Sculpture find inspiration in the natural world. Art has its own language; mysterious, insightful or invoking sensations, imagination and memory.  I find joy and freedom in making something invisible come to life, and then to share it with others.

To find something lovely

is a form of poetry within

the body of our being without words.

My normal color palette tends to run in earth colors and muted tones.
That’s were I’m most comfortable. Balance and light are the principal guides,
probably from being a photographic artist utilizing black and white with selenium
tones for so many years. We’ll see where it leads to next!

Palm Vessel Sculptures

Inspired by found nature materials I transform
these to communicate with an  expand imagery,
and leading to a sense of reflection.
Working with only organic materials,
I discover that nature herself is our first artist,
offering models of beauty, shape, proportion,
texture and design.
The vessels as symbols of passage, suggest
journeys of the spirit and imagination.

These Palm Vessels utilize mostly local natural materials, each one as unique as nature.  Sails are made with linen flax, bark, cotton and/or indigo dyed handmade paper. Perota wood for a base. Additional rocks, shells, stem pods, wooden buttons, seaweed, willow, jute, waxed thread or driftwood pieces may be used.
